Note: I can’t believe this took me over 3 hours to compile; please treat with love and care.
Compared to Berkeley, there are an insane amount of foods right within walkable distance from NTU. It’s basically a wonderland for foodies. Here are some of my recommended ones 🙂 Note that even though I like them a lot, I’ve been to most of them only once. That’s because I like to try as many restaurants as possible!
There are a few that I’ve frequented though, and these are for sure my favorites when I’m not cooking in my own dorm kitchen. Please Google for more details if you can’t find them below. Pictures go ABOVE ABOVE ABOVE the description.
1. Vegetable breakfast wrap
Lane 78, Section 4, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
They’re only here on weekdays, starting around 7:30AM (I know because I went one time at 7AM and they were still setting up and I waited until 7:45AM before I actually got food :P). Breakfast only, not sure the exact end time though.
I love all the vegetables!! Alfafa sprouts, purple cabbage, carrots, peanut powder, etc etc. Love having this for breakfast.
2. Whole wheat dumplings 陳師父全麥水餃
No. 92號, Section 4, Roosevelt Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Inside Shuiyuan market, with whole wheat noodles, dumplings, noodle soups, and so forth. The bottom order is their dumplings with vegetables, highly recommend getting it if you want a giant bowl of freshly made vegetables!
3. Porridge 源士林粥品
No. 134號, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Bowls of porridge made right when you order! You can choose seafood, or poultry, or vegetables and mushrooms, and so on. The broth is flavorful without being overly salty, and you get Chinese donuts as toppings!
4. Vegetable wrap (dinner) 養身蔬菜捲
No. 2-3, Lane 108, Section 4, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100 （approximate location)
It’s a stand inside Gongguan night market, you’ll see a cart that lists all the raw vegetables that go inside like cabbage, alfafa sprouts, cucumbers, apples, and so on. I like this less than the breakfast one because the breakfast one feels less like a salad, but this one is here for dinners.
5. Korean food 小飯館兒
No. 202, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, 汀洲路三段202號
Yummy and affordable Korean food! The bibimbap was 130NT. The dakgalbi and ramen were awesome too. Unlimited side dishes, rice, and drinks.
Those conclude my regulars. Below are various places I’ve explored and enjoyed! I won’t say “It’s good! It’s yummy!” for every single one because if they’re on this list they’re tasty by default, so I’ll simply list some highlights or special notes. In no particular order….
6. Shaved ice, grass jelly, and tofu pudding 三姐妹豆花
No. 2, Lane 90, Section 4, Luosifu Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
I’ve had weird tofu pudding but this place is authentic and offers so many different choices for toppings! My favorites for both shaved ice and tofu pudding are peanut, mung bean, barley.
7. Noodles, fried rice, dumplings, and stuff. 山東大史餃子館
No. 11-1, Lane 24, Section 4, Roosevelt Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Super affordable (like 50NT per bowl affordable) noodles made to order! Get their housemade noodles, because they’re stretchy and chewy. They also offer regular thin noodles if you’re into that.
8. Whole wheat wraps (non-vegetarian) 楊記全麥營養潤餅捲
100, Taiwan, Taipei City, Zhongzheng District (approximate location).
They’re also a stand in Gongguan night market. Specialty is their whole wheat wraps with meat, cooked cabbage, and peanuts. I think the moral of this post is that I really like 潤餅, a traditional Taiwanese street food made of paper-thin wraps and various fillings, but always contains tofu curd, cooked cabbage + bean sprouts, peanut powder, cilantro.
9. Green onion egg pancakes 劉記 古早味蔥蛋餅
No. 2-3, Lane 108, Section 4, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
I wrote about these more in my post about why griddle pans are round, so check out the post! They sell green onion egg pancakes and caramelized sweet potatoes, but most people line up for the egg pancakes.
10. NTU soft serve! 台大小幅 台大合作社第一門市
No. 1, Section 4, Roosevelt Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
Get this inside one of the grocery co-ops within NTU campus, they offer vanilla, chocolate, or swirl. You can also buy fruit here if you don’t have time to go to an actual supermarket.
11. Thai food 阿剛泰式主題餐廳
No. 150號, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
I’m sorry to admit that there are multiple Thai food places right around here and I can’t remember if this was the exact one I went to, but most of them are highly rated as well so you can’t go wrong. Probably. Love lemongrass steamed fish and sauteed vegetables!
12. Beef noodles, chicken soup, udon, and more.香鄉麵食館
No. 133, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Great place next to dorms that has a lot of students and office workers here during meals, because they offer quality noms at a great price point. Takes a while to get your food, but worth the wait! I think the beef in their beef noodles was a little too tough, but the chicken soup looked awesome.
13. Sushi, chirashi, etc. 漁人食舖
106, Taiwan, Taipei City, Da’an District, 台北市大安區羅斯福路三段283巷36號
Hole-in-the-alley place where the shopowner goes to the fish market every morning to get fresh seafood! The chirashi was a great deal, and it comes with unlimited fish soup plus fruit. Super tasty.
14. Peanut tofu pudding 龍潭豆花
No. 239, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Unlike the place above, this place only sells tofu pudding of one flavor–peanuts. According to my mom though, this place’s tofu pudding is quite traditional in that it tastes very slippery and soft. Personally, I favor the first tofu pudding place I introduced (#6) , if only because I like lots of toppings.
15. Baked green onion pancake 舊漫窯烤蔥油餅
No. 305, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Unlike #9, this green onion pancake has onions folded into the dough, instead of mixed into it. The pancake is fried in oil, then baked in a hearth for a crispy exterior.
16. Ice cream and froyo. I.C.Airport 冰淇淋機場
No. 6, Lane 104, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District
They make their flavors fresh daily, check their Facebook for new flavors too! I love their blueberry yogurt flavor, and it comes with a delicious waffle cone. 70NT per scoop.
17. Ramen 鷹流東京豚骨拉麵－極匠
No. 4, Lane 104, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District
You line up outside to buy your noodle ticket from the vending machine, and then hand your ticket to the chefs inside for them to give you your noodles. I found this place pricy and the noodles too salty, but if you’re really into heavy ramen this is your spot!
18. Sushi rolls and cold noodles to go 小林阿盛壽司
No. 6, Lane 283, Section 3, Luosifu Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
They changed owners and the shop name and no longer sell sashimi as some reviews suggest, but for a sushi roll with pork sung, cucumbers, egg, and imitation crab, theirs are pretty good. And pretty.
19. All you can eat hotpot 新馬辣經典鴛鴦鍋
No. 295, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Unlimited hotpot and unlimited ice cream (Movenpick and Häagan-Dazs). This place brings you the food you order, while 馬辣 nearby is self-serve. Compared to 馬辣, this is slightly more expensive.
20. Vegetarian self-serve 中一蔬食園
Inside an alley so it’s kind of hard to find, but the food is good and the shopowner is nice. They have a tiny kitchen with an impressive variety of dishes for your to pick from. Compared to the vegetarian self-serve right next to the Prince dorms, I think this place is tastier, less oily, and more affordable. Pay by weight, with unlimited soup and dessert.
21. Fishball soup 佳興魚丸
No. 243, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
福州魚丸 (fuzhou fishballs) have pork inside the fish paste, which lends it interesting texture and flavors. This shop makes the fishballs right outside, and you can order it with various types of noodles!
22. Wheel Cake 晴光紅豆餅
No. 255, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District. Next to 東南亞戲院
Wheel cake in red bean, custard, daikon flavors. I like the daikon, because they don’t use the overly-salted marinated kind that most other places use. I also love crispy shells.
23. Panini 倆倆號-公館汀州店
No. 158-1, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
I got the tuna one, and it’s super, super salty. But this is one of the few toast places that actually makes it into a panini with crunchy bread, so it’s not an entirely lost cause. I think they might also offer whole wheat bread? Also remember to ask for crust on, because I didn’t know you could so I missed out on my favorite part of toast!
24. Steak and pasta Blue磚塊義法廚房
No. 169, Section 2, Xinhai Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
I rarely get Italian food here but when I do I’m happy to find cute shops with college budgets and fragrant foods! The risottos, steak, and pizza here are bomb.
25. Beef stew and curry don 丼咖哩
No. 7-1, Lane 316, Section 3, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan
Strictly takeout place with 5 types of curry/beef stew on the menu, and size small or large. They put the rice separately so you can take it someplace without it getting soggy!
26. Pineapple bun with ice cream 騰堂麵包茶飲
Small bakery where you order at the outside counter and take foods togo. Try their pineapple bun with ice cream (I chose milk flavor), and it before it melts! You see two large scoops on the edge but they fill the inside with ice cream too. So good.
27. Roadside pasta Pasta 2 Go
No. 72, Section 3, Xinsheng South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
All dishes are 100NT, and the shopowner sautés it right in front of you at a small roadside eatery. I liked the garlic shrimp pasta! With English menu.
28. Toast open for breakfast and all day 土司吐司
No. 4-3, Lane 160, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
You can call ahead to order, it takes 5-10ish minutes if you wait inside. The ingredients are fresh and tasty, but my toast was barely toasted! When I pointed out the pictures on their walls all have grill marks and are golden-brown, they said if you want it actually toasted you need to tell them in advance 😦 Toast has 3 flavors to choose: charcoal, milk, and whole wheat.
29. Oven-baked toast and sandwich 吃吐吧
No. 138-1, Section 4, Roosevelt Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Compared to #28 this place is has more unique flavors, like this pumpkin with salted egg. They use special Japanese fluffy toast, and toast the sandwich with cheese on top in a hearth.
30. Taco Tuesdays and Mexican food. El Sabroso Mexican Food
汀州路三段107號, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan
Tacos on Tuesdays only! I loved the tacos because the dough balls are flattened right when you order, and everything–tortilla, meats, onions, etc– are grilled fresh. It does take a while though. Mango salsa is good without being too spicy.
31. Taiwanese noodles, bentos, and street food 蕭家傳統小吃
No. 6, Lane 90, Section 4, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
I. Love. Taiwanese. Noodles.
32. Chinese-style noodles, rice, meat pastries 維綸麵食館
No. 279號, Section 3, Tingzhou Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
This is right next to a similar place called 順園小館 (don’t go. lukewarm food and terrible, passive-aggressive servers), so check the sign before you go in! I ordered green onion pancakes sautéed with beef, but their house specialty noodle soups also smelled wonderful.
33. Personal hot pot 溏老鴨平價小火鍋
No. 3, Lane 70, Section 3, Xinsheng South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
So many different soup bases and flavors to choose from! This is the first time I’ve had Boiling Point-style hot pot in Taiwan, every where else I’ve been to never puts the ingredients in the pot to start with. This place offers unlimited ice cream too, but nowhere on the caliber of #19.
34. Shaved ice and hot rice balls 台一牛奶大王
No. 82號, Section 3, Xinsheng South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
For some reason unbeknownst to me, tourists love this place. But aside from the salty rice balls (which I’ve never tried), most of what they offer is similar to #6, except it’s almost twice as expensive here. I did really love the mango shaved ice though.
35. Marinated vegetables and meats 阿姨滷味
No. 12, Lane 286, Section 3, Luosifu Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100
Ending on a place where I can get lots of vegetables! You can order individual dishes of marinated (aka cooked in broth, usually with soy sauce) vegetables, tofus, and meats, or order a set meal for 70NT that comes with various vegetables and noodles at the bottom. I love the generous portions of bean sprouts, tofu, and cabbage! I just really like vegetables in general. Many marinated snack places tend to be too salty, but this one wasn’t 🙂
Happy eating! “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” -Michael Bittman
